Unfortunately, this is patently untrue.   The reason why this belief is so common is that for the past several decades manufacturers in the industry have been making "leather-similar" materials.

These materials may incorporate some leather in them, but are filled or covered with man-made products to give them a certain gloss, texture, or thickness.
